Business Community Expresses Concern on FTA with China

Business Community Expresses Concern on FTA with China

Ram zi | December 15, 2017 | category: Business

Business community expresses concern on FTA with China.Business community, especially local manufacturers have expressed their concern and reservations on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China as it has been providing more benefit to China and local manufacturers are facing huge losses due to the demand of products being imported from China.

The Businessmen Panel of the FPCCI in a statement issued today said FTA with China is against the interests of Pakistan and local business community as it is causing massive losses to limping economy of Pakistan. The business community is of the view that trade deal was tilted towards China from the very beginning and all the attempts of the government to make any balance in this trade have filed and the Pakistani manufacturers and especially small traders have been facing losses.

The national economy of the country is also facing losses, the business community added.
The business community said that both the friendly countries should make necessary changes in the Pak-China FTA without delay as it has not providing any profit to Pakistan but resulted in heavy losses.
A leader of the Business Panel of the FPCCI Naseemur Rehman in a statement said
after the FTA Chinese exports have jumped from 3.5 billion dollars to over 16 billion
dollars making China the biggest trading partner of Pakistan while Pakistani exports have increased slightly.

Naseemur Rehman said that since 2006-07 the trade gap has surged from 2.9 billion
dollars to over $32 billion which has created problems for the business community and
the economic managers while China is not ready to make any meaningful change in the
deal. He said that the share of Chinese imports in the non-oil sector has surged
to 36 percent which must be noticed as the share of Pakistan exports has increased
insignificantly.
He said that China has signed many trade deals with other countries and blocks which has left its deal with Pakistan irrelevant, therefore the authorities should not sign any trade deal with friendly countries at the cost of local industries and local manufacturers.

Oppo F1s:

Introduction

Oppo has dependably had its own specific manner of emerging among the developing hordes of Chinese telephone producers and judging by deals reports and fan endorsement, the OEM is by all accounts doing at any rate something right. The F-arrangement of moderate, camera-driven gadgets has had a crucial influence in this achievement recipe since the start of 2016. The Oppo F1, the first “selfie-master”, figured out how to interest a shockingly expansive client base.

In any case, it was the F1 Plus, the subsequent that came a few months after the fact, that truly got the arrangement prevalent. It introduced an outline change and tended to a number of the frail purposes of its forerunner, with increases like a greater, 1080p AMOLED board, MediaTek Helio P10 SoC, 4GB of RAM and a far better 13MP selfie shooter.

APBF calls for promoting FDI

APBF calls for promoting FDI

APBF calls for promoting FDI

The All Pakistan Business Forum has urged the government to promote foreign direct investment (FDI) which has been maintaining a steady decline from a $5.2 billion peak in 2007-08 despite the government spending on overseas trade offices have been increased to Rs1.7 billion in 2016-17.

APBF president Ibrahim Qureshi said that only political will and drastic steps can revive the economy, which should be grown significantly and constantly for visible impact. He advocated the need for raising the country’s tax base so that tax-to-GDP ratio improves from current 9%.

Foreign direct investment fell by 45 percent to $460 million in the first five months of the current fiscal year, giving a disappointing picture of the economy.

However, it is good that the investment has shown a sign of improvement during first six months (Jul-Dec) after a long time as inflows improved 10 percent to cross the $1 billion mark. During the period, overall investment increased by 50 percent to $1.8 billion but this increase was achieved by involving the money borrowed through the Eurobond.

Quoting the State Bank of Pakistan data, he said that FDI has been declining for the last three years despite regular investments from China.

He said that the primary function of trade offices is to promote exports that have persistently been falling for a long time. Country’s exports during 2015-16 dropped by 12 percent to $20.8 billion despite the fact that government expenses to run foreign trade offices have jumped by over 30 percent.

Besides governance challenges, adverse security perception and political instability the foreign trade offices role is also vital to promote exports and attract FDI, he pointed out.

Ibrahim Qureshi urged the trade officers to explore opportunities to diversify exports of goods and services in their respective areas.

He appreciated the commerce ministry’s resolve to meet the challenges faced by Pakistan in European markets vigorously, suggesting it to devise strategies to promote Pakistani products. He called upon trade officers to take advantage of opportunities offered by China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and growth in Pakistan’s national economy made possible by strengthening of democratic institutions and improvement of security situation in Pakistan.

FDI improvement in Dec 2016 reflects the improvement in security situation, implying that investors had started coming back to Pakistan. Moreover, country’s liberal policies of investment offered one of the most attractive investment regimes in the region.

APBF president said that Pakistan’s trade with European Union has increased substantively after the grant of GSP+ status to Pakistan.
