Women Empowerment: Blurring The Boundaries Across Diverse Communities

Women Empowerment: Blurring The Boundaries Across Diverse Communities. What comes to a person’s mind when we talk about empowerment? I think empowerment is based on the idea of how much a person is in control of their life, the choices and decisions in their life and choosing what path they want to lead. Unfortunately, the more people think they are empowered, they less they are, if we really look into it.

Our lives are mostly in the hands of other people, even our important decisions of life are taken by other people. So often, we are so much relying on other people at an unconscious level that even we, do not know what we are missing on and what aspects of our life are being lead by

This state of powerlessness and giving our threads in hands of other people to play with
leads us to a life where most of our decisions are not our own and thus we are not in control of our own lives.

When talking about rural community and urban community, many people in the urban setting are empowered enough but at the same time the rural people are suffering from lack of basic education, basic rights, jobs and decision making especially the women in these rural areas.
Some women in far-off villages have no say in how many children they want to carry.

The male head of the family makes all the decisions and the women are not given enough say in
any of the household matters.

One thing, I noticed in Pakistan, is that we organize seminars and workshops around certain problems but instead of trying to get to the solutions of that particular problem, we just focus on what the problem is. Which, in result, leave us clueless about the solutions. If we talk about women empowerment in rural areas, we can literally go about for hours on what are the problems that are being faced by the women there but we do not try to come up with solutions and even if we do, we do not put the solutions in actions.

I, came across an organization in Pakistan, whose agenda is women empowerment in
Pakistan especially in the rural areas and creating a gender just society where women are
given equal say in all of the matters. The way that they are tackling the problem is by giving
these women vocational training for different skill sets including stitching, fashion
designing, livestock and digital literacy.

The organization’s belief is that if a women is economically stable, she ultimately gets a say in household matters which makes her economically and socially empowered to lead her life in a better way and to make profound decisions for herself and for her family.

While visiting the vocational centers, I was amazed to see the spirit of these resilient
women, who travel their way to the centers, sometimes even breaking the social norms of their regional society and despite of all the family pressures, are determined to make good
use of their lives and not just let other people lead their life instead of they themselves.

Also, along with the training and skill sets they acquire, there are intangible learning like
the knowledge of tackling difficult situations in life, the courage, the confidence to face
people boldly and above all, empowerment!
In order to achieve success and better future, this is an important step. The more we let our
women unleash their potential, the more stability it would bring to our nation. And without
any doubt, this is the utmost need of today.

Religion and Women Empowerment in Pakistan

Religion and Women Empowerment in Pakistan

Religion and Women Empowerment in Pakistan. Recently, the usage of the word “feminism” has changed its altogether meaning from talking about equal rights for women to something more than just equality, involving a change in its whole ideology and philosophy. The three waves that we hear about today and see a lot of debates going on about the topic on multiple social media platforms, had initially some other meaning from what it is today. The ideology of a patriarchal society that exists in our country has played an important role in the birth of this concept of feminism in Pakistan.

The core of feminism is equal rights for all the people regardless of their gender. People who talk against this concept, might not even understand what the ideology behind this whole narrative is. This can be safely said that a woman plays a very important role in  shaping a society by how she grooms herself and her family.  A nation cannot prosper without allowing one gender to move forward in a graceful manner and maybe it is us that have given birth to the concept of patriarchy.

Not empowering the women of a society, is often the underlying cause of many evils in the society.  A woman, who cannot speak for herself, who cannot make her own decisions, who is not a part of household decisions, who gets no say in the matters of her children is a woman we disagree to empower, as a society. Which in itself, is a cliche. People want their sons to get higher education and get independent but when it comes to our daughters, we often just ignore the fact that they are as competent as any male member of the society. These decisions are mostly due to this patriarchal mindset that exists in our part of the world. And talking about changing this, scares a lot of people.

I mean, change is scary, but this needs to be understood that change is sometimes what we need to move ahead, to move forward. This needs to be understood that women empowerment in Pakistan can bring about positive impacts in our society, our daughters are as hardworking, as talented and as sharp as our sons and they have the basic human right to choose for themselves, to make better choices since they are the ones who have to live with those choices. Education, is the key here but there are areas where even if the parents allow their daughters to get education, they do not allow them to get jobs for themselves thinking that it would be of no use and the primary task of a female is to take care of the household chores.

Vocabulary falls short when the need of women empowerment is to be highlighted especially in a country like ours. We hide behind the veil of Islam saying that Islam doesn’t allow a woman to go out of the four boundaries of their homes but we forget about Hazrat Khadija, who was the greatest businessman of her time. I happened to attend a workshop on equality and justice by a well-reputed organization, a student of a prestigious institution pointed out that:

“The boundary between how liberal we are and how conservative we are is a very thin line. And as stupid as it may sound, but we ourselves keep shifting between both. We do what suits us. We, proudly, become liberal when it’s the daughters of other that we are talking about, and we strictly become conservative when our daughters come under discussion.”

As much as my inner so-called Muslim wanted me to scream and shout about it, the human logic didn’t disagree at all. I think humanity forms the basics of any religion and every religion in the world, and it is only the basic humanity that wants us to be empathetic towards other fellow beings and let them enjoy all the basic human rights. Gender restriction only makes women consider themselves as not able citizens of a nation and that eventually, results in a less enabled society.

Women Empowerment and Fashion Trends.Clothing is not only just a way to cover the bodies, it has shifted to a way to express the personality traits using new trendy clothes in Pakistan.  We, human beings, have a need to wear clothes. The purpose and functionality of clothing is physical in the sense that clothing helps protect the human body against variations in weather.

This need for clothing can also be a psychological factor as clothing can function as a form of nonverbal communication to others that sends social signals. The clothes a person wears and how they are worn may provide a signal to others about their identity, tastes and individuality. Fashion, although, is a subjective concept that totally depends on a person’s own understanding of the whole thing. A person may find some vintage designs and styles to suit their personality or a person may like to update his or her wardrobe according to the latest dressing trends and latest design clothes of the society.

In the race of this need to look personal best, Pakistan has also emerged on the map and has also developed a lot of sense of fashion and design in the past few years. Our designers are constantly making great advancements towards the innovation and creation in this field to meet the consumer requirements. Clothing is not only just a way to cover the bodies anymore, instead it has shifted to a way to express the personality traits using these new  designer clothes in Pakistan.

This recent advancement, both physically and psychologically, has given birth to a new market trend that is online shopping and shopping portals which is an easy way to shop from the comfort of our homes. A person can relax in their homes and not have to go out in the scorching heat and just pull up their laptops or even cellphones and just in a few clicks, purchase whatever they think reflects their interests for clothing trends of summers.

With technological advancements, consumer doesn’t even has to provide their debit card or credit card details in order to be safe from the internet scams, and just avail the COD (cash-on-delivery) option, which almost all the online shopping store are providing now. This not only contribute towards saving time but also from internet frauds, which is a huge relief for many of us.

Online Handmade Clothing

All the major names in the designer clothing industry of Pakistan have their online presence now on almost all the major social media platforms with worldwide shipping options, which results in a more broad consumer bracket of our traditional and rich with heritage designer clothing. Some of these shops do not even exist in the market and are exclusively available online and making. I, recently came across an organization that works for women empowerment in Pakistan especially in the rural areas.

I was glad to see how this organization is working for change and a better tomorrow on the grass-root level. While, in conversation with one of their heads, it came to my attention how some great women workers had been suffering through the whole market linkage process. But with this new trend of online shopping, it has gone relatively easy for these artisans who are sitting in the far-off villages to commercialize their products and earn a dignified livelihood.

When a woman is given economic hand in the society, that is where the real women empowerment begins. In some backward areas of Pakistan where women are not given an equal say in the matters of household, women who get determined to break the social barriers and step out of their homes and comfort zones for a better tomorrow of their families earns good, gets a say in household decision making and contribute towards a better society on all fronts.
