METRO Cash & Carry Pakistan has joined hands with UN Women by signing Women Empowerment Principles to promote Women in Trade (WiT) initiative to enhance the capability of informal workers, along with its employees in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 – to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

Women in Trade (WiT) initiative is an international employee network within METRO AG aiming to support and promote the professional development of women.Within the local chapter, METRO Pakistan has set two goals which is to ‘drive cultural change in the company’ and ‘focus on female employment &development internally and externally.’

UN Women and METRO Pakistan will be working together to enhance women’s access to organized work opportunities. The Seven Principles for Women’s Empowerment – a joint initiative of UN Women and the UN Global Compact – provide a set of guidelines to assist companies focus on key elements, integral to promoting gender equality in the workplace, marketplace and community, through policy and action. This includes the promotion of women to executive positions, career development opportunities for female employees, supporting women-owned companies as vendors and service providers, promoting a positive image of women in marketing campaigns and enhancing basic facilities within the company (childcare, maternity and paternity leave, flexible work options, etc.).

Women Empowerment: Blurring The Boundaries Across Diverse Communities

Women Empowerment: Blurring The Boundaries Across Diverse Communities

Women Empowerment in Rural Areas of Pakistan

Women Empowerment: Blurring The Boundaries Across Diverse Communities. What comes to a person’s mind when we talk about empowerment? I think empowerment is based on the idea of how much a person is in control of their life, the choices and decisions in their life and choosing what path they want to lead. Unfortunately, the more people think they are empowered, they less they are, if we really look into it.

Our lives are mostly in the hands of other people, even our important decisions of life are taken by other people. So often, we are so much relying on other people at an unconscious level that even we, do not know what we are missing on and what aspects of our life are being lead by
others.

This state of powerlessness and giving our threads in hands of other people to play with
leads us to a life where most of our decisions are not our own and thus we are not in control of our own lives.

When talking about rural community and urban community, many people in the urban setting are empowered enough but at the same time the rural people are suffering from lack of basic education, basic rights, jobs and decision making especially the women in these rural areas.
Some women in far-off villages have no say in how many children they want to carry.

The male head of the family makes all the decisions and the women are not given enough say in
any of the household matters.

One thing, I noticed in Pakistan, is that we organize seminars and workshops around certain problems but instead of trying to get to the solutions of that particular problem, we just focus on what the problem is. Which, in result, leave us clueless about the solutions. If we talk about women empowerment in rural areas, we can literally go about for hours on what are the problems that are being faced by the women there but we do not try to come up with solutions and even if we do, we do not put the solutions in actions.

I, came across an organization in Pakistan, whose agenda is women empowerment in
Pakistan especially in the rural areas and creating a gender just society where women are
given equal say in all of the matters. The way that they are tackling the problem is by giving
these women vocational training for different skill sets including stitching, fashion
designing, livestock and digital literacy.

Religion and Women Empowerment in Pakistan

The organization’s belief is that if a women is economically stable, she ultimately gets a say in household matters which makes her economically and socially empowered to lead her life in a better way and to make profound decisions for herself and for her family.

While visiting the vocational centers, I was amazed to see the spirit of these resilient
women, who travel their way to the centers, sometimes even breaking the social norms of their regional society and despite of all the family pressures, are determined to make good
use of their lives and not just let other people lead their life instead of they themselves.

Also, along with the training and skill sets they acquire, there are intangible learning like
the knowledge of tackling difficult situations in life, the courage, the confidence to face
people boldly and above all, empowerment!
In order to achieve success and better future, this is an important step. The more we let our
women unleash their potential, the more stability it would bring to our nation. And without
any doubt, this is the utmost need of today.

PepsiCo recommences vow to empowering women

PepsiCo celebrated International Women’s Day at its Head Office with an interactive session, which brought together women of diverse backgrounds to speak about their challenges and accomplishments. This year’s theme for International Women’s Day was “Be bold for change”. The session, modeled on the TEDx theme of speaking extemporaneously, included comments from speakers, questions from the audience, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Adel Garas, PepsiCo’s President for the Asia Pacific Region.

“People are PepsiCo’s greatest asset,” said Garas. “We believe in building a workforce that reflects the diverse consumers and communities we serve. Gender equality, diversity and inclusion are core to our company’s values and how we operate as a global corporate citizen in Pakisan and around the world. While we have accomplished much, we recognize that there is more work to do. We recently surveyed female associates to help us identify opportunities to positively impact engagement and commitment of our female associates, and enable them to unleash their full potential.”

Adding to Mr. Garas’s comments, PepsiCo Pakistan’s Vice President and General Manager, Mr. Furqan Ahmed Syed, thanked PepsiCo’s female associates for their invaluable contributions. “You have been an integral part of our successes over the years and I count on your passion, creativity and leadership to make PepsiCo Pakistan the pride of PepsiCo, and an employer of first choice for females in our country,” said Mr. Syed. “Indeed, diversity and inclusion will be critical to achieving our Performance with Purpose goals for 2025 by helping to create a sustainable advantage for us.”

Drinking too much Water May Cause Serious Illness or Death

The doctor warned that drinking plenty of fluid could be dangerous. Drinking plenty of water raised a question when 59 years old women became gravely ill by drinking so much water and treated in King’s College hospital in South London.

The women developed the symptoms of urinary tract infection then she overdose the water intake. Because of the infection she was advised by the doctor to drink plenty of water, she said that she thought she should consumed more water to flush out the bacteria of her urinary tract.

She was brought to A&E where the doctors found she was suffering very low level of salt in her blood. This happened because she drank too much water in a short period of time.

It can take to the very serious level of illness the minor level symptoms are vomiting, nausea and headache and the serious level symptoms are brain swelling which may cause confusion, seizures, coma and death.

The abnormally low salt level in the body has reported the death rate of almost 30 percent. The doctors said it is hard to understand for everybody that how much water is enough for the body.

The doctors described the condition of the patient woman when she brought to the hospital, they said her body was progressively shaky and muddled and she was vomiting several times a day and she was tremulous and exhibited significant speech difficulties, with the doctors reduced the water intake for next 24 hours.

They said another young female patient brought to the hospital suffering with the same situation but they could not save her life.

The patient herself shared her experience, she said that she lost 24 hours of her life when a UTI or her action in response to it took over her life. She said her hands were shaking violently in front of her and she had no control to stop them then she realized her whole body was shaking, she said it took a week for her to feel normal and felt tired for another week.

Dr Laura Christine and Dr Maryann Noronha said that we advise our patient to drink plenty of water and to keep themselves well hydrated and this is a harmless advise all the symptoms such as vomit, body shaking, speech difficulty, nausea, headache, confusion seizures, coma are the result of low sodium level in the body not because of the water if you just maintain the level of sodium then drinking water will not show any side effect.

Dr Imran Rafi who is the Chairman of clinical innovation and research at the Royal College of GRs said that we recommend our patient to drink plenty of water to keep them hydrated which is necessary for good health of mild and body. He said we recommend it especially for those who do physical work or exercise. Colour of urine is the best way to check the hydration level of your body but the doctors should make it clear how much water should the patient drink according to his or her dehydration level.
